What You'll Learn
Develop a sound knowledge of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa and the New Zealand curriculum, Māori pedagogies, planning, teaching assessment and evaluation of teaching practices plus the importance of internal management systems and their relevance. Become a confident professional within the sector by critically analysing policies, procedures and documents relevant to both English and Māori teaching environments, and applying methods of teaching appropriate for optimum child development.
During the three years you will undertake a minimum of 24 weeks teaching practicum in a primary school setting giving you the opportunity to experience and practice methods learnt during residential seminars and through individual research. You will be supported every step of the way as you begin your journey from learning to teaching, this is also an excellent qualification towards higher progression in the education sector.
Poutuarongo Te Rangakura Kaiwhakaako, Bachelor of Teaching (Bilingual), is eligible for Teach NZ scholarships. Check on the Teach NZ website for more information.
To enrol in this qualification you must first complete the Heke Te Rangakura Kaiwhakaako which is a one year diploma and the first year towards this three year qualification.
Course Structure
The Bachelor of Teaching (Bilingual) is a three-year qualification.
Applicants under the age of 20 must have university entrance (UE) or the equivalent to UE. The literacy, numeracy and ITC competency assessments will be used to ensure that applicants over the age of 20 meet comparable literacy and numeracy requirements as those entering with UE. Applicants will also have a strong commitment to develop te reo Māori me ōna tikanga and incorporate te reo into their teaching practice.

PTRA101 - Te Rangakura 1 - Me hoki ki ngā Paiaka
To present the Te Rangakura experience as a contextual base for the study of bilingual teaching frameworks underpinned by Māori pedagogy.

Students will be introduced to the New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa and the New Zealand Curriculum documents.

Students will be introduced to current teaching practices in a Māori medium and English medium learning environment focussing on planning, teaching, assessment and evaluation.

Students will be introduced to internal management systems and study the impact on teaching and learning in Māori medium and English medium learning environments.

To conduct a private study of one marae in order to identify and strengthen connections to ‘the marae as our principal home’.

Te Reo Māori
REO101 Hui Rumaki Reo 1
The overall aim of the year one reo programme encourages analysis of basic grammar through the online course; an introduction to written Māori; research through self-directed learning and oral practice in the Māori language through Hui Rumaki Reo with an emphasis on marae activities.

To explore the historical and social context of the Te Rangakura experience in Aotearoa as a model for Māori self-determination.

Students will develop their understanding and knowledge of the New Zealand Curriculum and Te Marautanga o Aotearoa Curriculum documents.

To examine the major features and characteristics of a selected hapū in order to deepen our understanding of hapū origins and group survival.

Students will gain a deeper appreciation of the cultural significance of a taonga to a selected hapū and/or iwi, and it’s role in strengthening, maintaining and enhancing relationships.

How You'll Learn
Residential Seminars (Noho) Attend on-campus noho at Te Wānanga o Raukawa in Ōtaki. These intensive blocks combine lectures, workshops, and wānanga-style learning with your cohort.
Online Learning via Mūrau Complete weekly tutorials and activities through our online learning space. Te reo and iwi/hapū studies begin in the first week of the academic year, before your first specialisation noho.
Hui Rumaki Reo Attend two te reo immersion hui on campus each year (one per semester) to deepen your language skills in a supportive environment.
Teaching Practicum 24 weeks of supervised teaching in primary school settings across your three years, giving you real classroom experience.
Self-Directed Study Independent research and assignment work, supported by your pūkenga (tutors) throughout.
Online Seminars (Noho) Engage in online webinars and tutorials with opportunities for discussion and wananga learning.

Become a kaitiaki of our future and develop the necessary knowledge, attitudes and skills needed to access and pass on ngā taonga tuku iho to our future generations. If you have ever wanted to be a teacher in a whānau class or bilingual setting this qualification is for you. This course is taught in te reo Māori and English.
The mātauranga (knowledge) you will learn is drawn from the study of iwi and hapū values, knowledge and institutions in a way that is consistent with the notion of a Māori world view curriculum and its application in the kaupapa Māori educational context.
Te Reo and Iwi and Hapū Studies
Over the years, you will complete weekly tutorials and activities in Te Reo via our online space, Mūrau. These not only prepare you to attend two hui rumaki reo on campus each year (one per semester); but will further enhance your Te Rangakura journey as you learn the value and mana our language holds in the teaching and learning space. Yes, it can be scary, but you will not be taking the journey alone nor do need to have any reo to begin! You will be guided every step of the way with tutor support.
You will also study two papers each year towards your Iwi and Hapū studies to compliment your learning, these are often the most rewarding part of study for the majority of our students as they gain a deep connection back to their roots. Your Iwi and Hapū papers will be online with excellent tutor support to help you through, week by week activities. The assignments that you complete will become a taonga and resource for your whānau, marae, iwi and will be treasured for years to come.
Te Reo and Iwi and Hapū studies begin in the first week of the academic year, so you can begin your studies before your first specialisation noho. You will also get the opportunity to meet your reo and iwi and hapū pūkenga during your first noho on campus.
